Note	At Primrose Hill from 1881 and probably some time earlier, he was known as "Dafis, Primrose Hill": A delightful account of him appears in a book " Cymeriadau cefn gwlad" by Ap Nathan ‎(Llyfrau’r Castell 1948)‎ this has been translated by Peter Meazey: ‎(24 May 2004)‎ Dafis, Primrose Hill Evan was the name his parents had given him, but he was never referred to as Evan Davies, only as Dafis, Primrose Hill. He was a fairly tall thickset man. His fine body was set off by a big round head with his two eyes standing out ‎( like ???? theauthor gives, as a local expression, “ar dorr y croen” – can’t find dorr/torr anywhere, croen means skin)‎. His big nose was a sign of determination, while his lips showed the kindness that was also part of his nature. Two things set him apart from everyone else in the area. One of these was the way he shaved his face. Most of the men had big hairy beards and if they had a trim at all it was only to remove the hair from their upper lips on a Saturday night. Dafis had long sideburns, a bit longer than really necessary to join up with his moustache, but he was clean-shaven from there down. When you were standing face to face with him you could imagine he was trying to train his facial hair to form a letter W. The other difference was the fact that he didn’t work to earn his living. He was said to be a rich man, though nobody knew how much he had. He was never seen going to the bank, about a mile from his dwelling. As far as the parishioners knew he didn’t have a hand in any kind of business. But although what he lived on was a bit of a mystery he was too much of a gentleman for anybody to dare go so far as to ask him. He was one of the old inhabitants. He was born at Bwllfa farm, outside the valley, where his family had been living for several generations. Dafis could see the farm from the lawn of Primrose Hill. When anyone talked to him of a stranger who had moved into the area, all he would say was “Oh, I’ve been here for ever, for ever.” Not only did he present himself to others as part of the place but he really counted himself as a local. If you scratched the surface you could come to the conclusion that he was nevertheless an outsider or that his family had moved into the area a generation or two earlier. The local inhabitants were small men, lively and brisk in speech and action, whereas Dafis was a big man who walked slowly. The way he talked suggested some slowness of thought, and he was always very quiet in company. Despite his insistence that he had “always, always” been here, the local dialect didn’t slip easily off his tongue. He always said “Ifan” rather than “Iefan”, “caws” and not “ciaws”, “heol” not “hewl” and wouldn’t have dreamed of saying “ticyn” for “tipyn” or “tocins” for pennies. This was not due to grammatical or literary interest on his part, more an endowmentfrom his well-spoken parents or perhaps some literary tradition inherited from his ancestors. He was to all appearances, by his body and his speech, different from the other parishioners but his kindness and good nature showed he was one of them. Wherever he went, he had a friendly greeting for everyone. All his dealings with his fellow men were marked by the same quiet politeness. He was the same gentle man on his way to chapel on Sunday as on the street on a weekday. On top of this, his charity was proverbial amongst his neighbours. The milk jug, the eggs and other necessities regularly found their way to the rooms of the sick with no fuss and noise. He would have been the last to boast about it. This generosity came to view in a special way at Christmas. No matter how many children called in at Primrose Hill to wish the old man a Happy New Year, there was always a glass of milk, a piece of cake and a few shiny new pennies for every one ofthem. ‎(Cut…. This goes on a bit, insisting on the kindliness and generosity which seem to have really impressed the author - who I presume was one of the children.)‎ He would also talk to the children in the street every time he had the chance, and just wishing him good day was enough to open a store of memories. It is a pity that scores of these stories have not been noted and remembered. He recalled the baptism of thirteen people in the river near Ynys Fach field, when Twm Llewelyn wrote the poem about the baptism of his brother Morgan. The poet didn’t rate his brothers faith very highly and cast some doubt on the value of the ceremony : Fe fedyddiwyd tri-ar-ddeg O dynion teg yr olwg Rhai yn fawr a rhai yn fan Yn Ystrad lan Dyfodwg Ac yn ei plith ‘roedd Moc fy mrawd ‘Doedd ganddo ef ond crefydd dlawd Fe drodd liw’r dwr wrth olau dydd O’r Ynys Fach I Bontypridd ‎(I have juggled with this to try and give an idea – the first four lines have an internal rhyme which I have only managed to reproduce by messing about a bit with the meaning.)‎ Baptised they were, the three-and-ten Good Christian men both great and small, The Rhondda’s finest that fair day Went bathing with their clothes and all Amongst them was my brother Mog Whose faith was frankly rather slack From Ynys Fach to Pontypridd He turned the whole damn river black He also claimed some relationship with the family at Cwmsaerbren, where the wife received such a rebuke from Twm the poet on account of her soup always being so thin Pe byddai blwyddyn gyfan Heb fwrw glaw yn unman, Fe fyddai dwr gan ferch y diawl Yng nghrochan cawl Cwmsaebren. Literally, with all the poetry wrung out : If a whole year went past Without a drop of rain anywhere The devil's daughter would still be watering down the soup In the cauldron at Cwmsaerbren. The same sort of pride in his heritage could also be seen in his fondness for telling the story of how he went from Bwllfa to Aberdare in his youth to fetch coal. He started out very early on the back of a pony leading eight donkeys with baskets on their backs. He took great pleasure in recounting this adventure, going over Tiroedd yr Eglwys ‎(the church lands)‎, down to Blaenllechau past Llyn y Morynion and then climbing over the ridge to Cwmaman. He talked a lot about his disappointment at not being able to go up into Aberdare town to see his eldest brother, the famous Doctor. He could remember the name of every mule and all the tricks they got up to. He would go right through the voyage in detail, making much of how tired and worn out each of them was at the end of the day after carrying such a heavy load. Then after all this description a smile would come over his face and a new tone to his voice. Gone was the careful classical phrasing, out came the local dialect. “Just think”, he would say, “ there we were boys, going all the way to Aberdare to fetch coal, and loads of the stuff under our own feet. There’s stupid we were, isn’t it ? And, do you know what ? It was under the doorstep of the Bwllfa ‎(the farmhouse where he was born)‎ that they worked the first coal in the parish.” He told this story a hundred times, but he changed it every time. To us children, the voyage over the mountains to Aberdare was a wonderful story. Some of the older people were surprised to hear that coal had been found so close to the surface atBwllfa, but the glory of it all to Dafis was that his family was connected to the first colliery in the area. Dafis, Primrose Hill, went through life a friend to all, especially to children. He was so much liked that if anyone had ever dared to criticize him I think the whole area would have risen as one man to drive the slanderer away. Da wladwr duwiol ydoedd, A gwr i Dduw o’r gwraidd oedd Impossible to translate – this is an epitaph in cynghanedd, strict rules of alliteration repeating combinations of consonants. The meaning is as follows : He was a good and godly countryman A man of God right to his roots. Notes Twm Llewelyn is also known as Tomos Hywel Llewelyn. Poet and carpenter, he lived from 1780-1852. There are other verses by him about this area – he lived for some time in Ty Gibbwn, Treorchy. The Cwmsaerbren verse is in Triban form, a Glamorgan speciality, with four lines rhyming aab‎(b)‎a. The ‎(b)‎ is an internal rhyme in the fourth line. The syllables have to be counted ‎(7, 7, 8, 7)‎ and since the lines are very short this doesn’t leave much to play with. I have only ever managed to pull one off in English – they are of course much easier in Welsh. This one will give you the feel – it is an accurate translation of a verse by Watcyn Dafydd ‎(1797-1876)‎ weaver and innkeeper in Ystradfellte : Oh cuckoo, stop your chirping You’re stopping me from sleeping If I could climb that rotten tree I’d kick your bleeding head in !
Note	Note from Ron Davies re the above translation by Pater Meazey: ‎(24 May 2004)‎ In reading through the account, I have attempted to explain to my own satisfaction the discrepancies between some of the assertions it contains and the corresponding data in my files. I don't think there is really any inconsistency between Evan DAVIES conveying to the children that he had "always, always been here" and the fact that he was born at Cwmsaerbren, some 6kms away as the crow flies, farmed first Clynmoch ‎(near Ynyswen, less than 5 kms)‎ then Bwllfa ‎(which "he could see.. from the lawn of Primrose Hill")‎. All that would certainly have been "here" to an adult, even in those days, I imagine, although a child may have imagined "here" to mean the village itself. The account probably relates to the 1880's, when Evan was in his seventies. No mention is made of Evan's wife Margaret, who died in 1884, and was possibly housebound for several years before that ‎(she had a live-in ladies companion in 1881)‎, and Dafis, in the author's account, seems to have been always out and about on his own. We know that he was already installed at Bwllfa by 1851, so his stories to the children about his life at Bwllfa would go back thirty years or more - several lifetimes for a young child. And if Dafis stressed his relative youth at the time of his stories, as old men are inclined to do, to assure the credibility of the actions they describe, it is not unreasonable, I think, to assume that the child audience mayhave believed that he was talking of times when he was a mere child or adolescent, whereas we know that Evan was in his thirties when he moved to Bwllfa. This is well illustrated by the reference to the journey from Bwllfa to Aberdare to fetch coal, which, we are told occurred "in his youth". The fact that his "eldest" brother was already a "famous doctor" in Aberdare at the time, means that it must have been after 1847/8 when he qualified and arrived in Aberdare, so Evan would have been a,no-doubt, youthful 37/38. Perhaps he never actually claimed to have been "born at Bwllfa" but the assumption had been made by the children, because he had "always, always been here". Also interesting to note that "he changed ‎[the story]‎ every time" and probably wove some fiction into the fact to add interest to the story. Also quite likely, when talking to the children, that he may have referred to his doctor brother David as his elder brother ‎(even though he was, in fact, his youngest brother)‎ in order to draw himself a little closer to them in age. The pleasure he seems to have derived from being with children ‎(" .. a friend to all, especially to children...")‎ and telling his stories "a hundred times" is also indicative of a man who came from a large family, whose brothers had all produced large families, but had no children of his own ‎( presumably he and his wife - who married in their twenties - were physically unable to produce children)‎. As for being "a rich man", William DAVIES of Cwmsaerbren had sold the Cwmsaerbren estate to the Marquis of Bute in the late 1840's and made provison from the proceeds for each of his children, several of whom bought farms and others bought pubs and hotels. The timing of Evan's arrival at Bwllfa suggests to me that he probably bought the freehold with his inheritance, but I have not yet obtained proof of this. Either way, by the time he moved to Primrose Hill, as a retired farmer, it is understandable that he should have been able to "live on his own means".
