Powell Family History
Powells in the United
States of America - North-East
Research
into this part of the family history is still in its infancy, but we
know that several members of the family emigrated to the United States
and others visited the country, perhaps with the original intention of
emigration, but later returned to South Wales.
At least two of
the sons of Edward Powell and Mary Shaftesbury Morgan
emigrated and at least one other son travelled to America to visit his
brother, in Westmorland County, Pennsylvania, then later returned to
live in Glamorgan.
Edward's nephew, our great grandfather, Rees
Powell and his first wife Margaret Jones
travelled to the United States immediately after their marriage in
August 1860, and they stayed there at least long enough to have a son,
Thomas, born in Cattaraugus County, New York State, in October 1861.
Margaret died in July 1864, probably in the U.S.A., after which Rees
and son Thomas returned to Glamorgan. Thomas later married his cousin
Elizabeth Lougher Powell, and they emigrated to the U.S.A., settling
first in Idaho, then in Washington State. See Powells in United States of America -
North-West.
Rees'
sister Anne Powell and her husband Morgan Howell
also set off for New York immediately after their marriage - in 1869 -
arriving in New York aboard the S.S. Nevada in June 1869. Whether they
had intended to emigrate, how long and where they stayed are all
unanswered questions for the moment, but we know that their son Arthur
was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1875, and that the family were back in
Glamorgan
by the time of the 1881 Census.
