There are several Maddock family connections to our family tree. Mary Maddock of Margam (born 1804) married William Howell of Stormy Farm, Tythegston, several of whose descendants married Powells, notably their son Rees Howell,
born in 1835 at Longland Farm, Margam, married Elizabeth Powell, sister
of our great great grandfather Rees Powell, and their grandson, William Nicholas Howell, married Margaret (Maggie) Powell, sister of our grandmother Sarah Powell. Margary Maddock
of Llangynwyd married Jenkin Powell of St. Brides Minor and together
they started the line I refer to as the "St.Brides Minor Powells"
(see Other Powell Family Connections) several of whom intermarried with our ancestral line.
William Maddock,
son of William Maddock of Pentre Farm, Cwmdu, married Gwenllian Davies,
daughter of Rees Davies of Whitney Farm, Merthyr Mawr, one
of the brothers of our great grandfather Jenkin Davies.
William and Gwenllian farmed Whitney for several years in the early
1900's before moving to Brombil Farm, Margam, where they ended their
days. There were also
several marriages between the Maddock family and the Thomas family of
Bettws who intermarrid with our Rhondda Davies family (see also Thomas Family Connections).
Between the end of
2005 and April 2006 I was contacted independently by no less than six
MADDOCK descendants who found this website and who helped me to
fill gaps and correct discrepancies in the complex MADDOCK
tapestry. They were Annie Maddock, Sue Williams, Andrea Girling, Mary Friend, Dawn Snook, and Marion Groom,
all of whom are now registered users of this site and may be contacted
directly by other registered users via the site messaging system (or
indirectly via me for those who are not registered
users). In November yet another MADDOCK descendant contacted me and became a registered user of this site - John Maddocks, great-grandson of Thomas MADDOCK and Jennet JONES of Kenfig Hill.
I
have attempted to trace the origins of the various
Maddock/Maddocks families in the parishes around Bridgend, and have
succeeded in connecting most of them together, but I have so far
failed to establish beyond doubt a link between those mentioned above,
who are connected to our family tree, and a certain Anthony Maddock(s)
who was one of the parties in a famous local legend - that of the "Maid of Cefn Ydfa" . The Maddock family were still in residence at Cefn Ydfa in 1881 - Morgan Maddock and his wife Catherine Loveluck appeared there in the 1881 census.
